Hmm. Are you Really Anti (Against) Aging?

Everywhere you look, you see the term anti-aging used to describe various treatments and products to combat the signs of aging like fine lines/wrinkles, crows feet, and brown spots. I will admit I use those terms in my esthetics practice, but I often ask myself, am I genuinely against aging? The answer is NO! When looking at aging from a holistic point of view, I believe it is essential to embrace aging and focus on the things that one can control.

Why Should You Embrace Aging?

I want you to think about something. The definition of aging is growing old, but do we use the word aging when talking about our infants, children, or young adults? No, we use more positive words or phrases like growing up, developing, and maturing, which causes us to have a more positive mindset about the process.  So, why does growing up have such a negative connotation for people over the age of thirty? I wish I had the answer, but I can tell you one thing, I wouldn't trade any of it to be 18, 19, or 20 years old again.

Why? You see, my dad had a genetic disorder and only expected to live until about his 18th birthday, so he welcomed getting old. Lucky for me, he lived to the age of 35 and showed me first hand what it means to embrace life and aging. Instead of focusing on aging, I choose to focus on intangible things like exemplary health, accomplishments, experiences, and great friendships throughout my life.

Pssst. You Can Control How Well You Age

Last year my daughter, aunt, and I went on a family vacation, and a lot of people were surprised to find out my aunt was nearly 70 years old. During that trip, I took a great look at my aunt and realized her face looked just as good as most 40-year-olds.  That made me think, and as far back as I can remember, my aunt has always been pro-self-care. At that moment, I remembered something that was instilled in me since esthetics school; aging is 20% genetics and 80% of our habits. Ask yourself what practices are you doing daily to promote self-care? Are you eating right, working out, getting 8 hours of sleep, avoid smoking, drinking in moderation, making time to care for your skin? These are all things that I would consider pro-self-care that will allow you to embrace aging and put your best self forward in the process.

Sharing is caring, so comment below with one thing you are currently doing to be pro-self-care and something you look forward to as you continue to mature as an adult.

Thank you, and live beautifully!
