How to Improve Skin Breakouts and Irritation from Wearing a Face Mask
Skin irritations and breakouts due to wearing face mask seem to be the chief complaint from my clients. First of all, let me tell you this is normal. I experienced the same problems as soon as I returned to work and adjusted my skincare routine to combat the issues. If you are having the same issues, we welcome the opportunity to connect with you to get your skin back in balance. Take a few minutes to learn why this is happening and a few solutions we may have for you.
Why is the Face Mask Causing my Skin to Breakout?
We have a protective coating on the skin known as the acid mantle; it is the skin's invisible shield to seal in the good while keeping out the bad. The friction and pressure compromises the shield resulting in inflammation and irritation where the mask makes contact with the skin. Next, the added moisture and trapping of oil, dirt, and sweat on the skin makes the inside of your cover the perfect environment for acne, eczema, and rosacea flare-ups.
How Do I Care For My Skin While Wearing a Mask?
Now is the time to focus on nourishing, protecting, and balancing the skin by using hydrating, soothing, healing, and moisturizing ingredients. You may need to change your products just a little, especially if you are using acids (hyaluronic is the exception), retinol, and Retin-A. If you are under the care of a physician for skin conditions, I suggest you consult with the physician before making any changes to your skincare regimen.
IMAGE Skincare's Ormedic Collection, specifically the Ormedic balancing facial cleanser and the Ormedic balancing biopeptide creme, is my go-to to take care of the issues associated with wearing a mask. Both products have an aloe vera base and are great for sensitive, unbalanced, and irritated skin. The biopeptide creme is more of a night time product, but I find that my skin has benefited from using it midday as well.
Why Do I Need to Change out or Clean My Face Mask Often?
Remember, the inside of your face mask collects dirt, make-up, moisture, etc., and is an ideal environment for the growth of bacteria. The bacteria are still present when you remove the face mask and continues to grow and multiply between each wear. How often you change out your face mask may be dictated by your work, or at your discretion. For example, I have to change out my face mask between clients while at work. Outside of work, I change out my face mask at least once or more, depending on my activity that day.
Another great way to fix your mask problem is with a mask solution! The IMAGE Skincare purifying probiotic mask will help your skin look and feel soothed and clear. Apply to your entire face or just where your mask or even eyewear is bothering you.
