June is Acne Awareness Month; however, there are more than 50 million Americans who live with acne on a daily basis. I am proud to say I am 1 of 50 million and I understand the physical and psychological effects of acne. I know how it feels to be judged by the appearance of your skin and the feeling of despair because you think you will never get rid of acne. Well, I am living proof that you can!

What Causes Acne?

Acne is an inflammatory disorder that occurs when the follicle becomes clogged with oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells. Hormonal changes, genetics, emotional stress, a greasy or humid environment, and medications are common causes of acne. It is common in pre-teens and teen and can continue into adulthood. Adult women typically experience more breakouts than their male counterparts due to the hormonal changes associated with monthly cycle, pregnancy and menopause.

How Can An Esthetician Help Get My Acne Under Control?

Your esthetician has extensive education on acne and product ingredients and will recommend a treatment plan to get your acne under control. Your treatment plan will consists of a home care regimen and a series of facial treatments targeted for acneic skin. During the facials, a combination of therapies will used to kill bacteria, reduce inflammation, dry lesions, promote exfoliation, and unclog pores.

How Can I Care For Acne At Home?

  1. Do not touch acne lesions – I know that is easier said than done; however, touching lesions spreads the bacteria which can lead to more acne.

  2. Do not squeeze the lesions – Believe it or not, squeezing lesions actually forces the infected material deeper into the skin.

  3. “Clean Towel Method” - This method applies to daily use items like towels, pillow cases, and make-up brushes. Changing pillow cases and make-up brushes daily is difficult; I opted for a hospital grade antibacterial spray and using my fingertips and cotton swabs.

  4. Follow home care regimen and instructions recommended by esthetician - Consistency and product ingredients are key to correcting skin conditions. I figured this out the hard way! I was receiving the professional skin treatments but continued to use my department store skin care regimen, not a good idea. After about nine months, I decided to go with the products recommended by my esthetician; guess what happened? My skin was 50% better within 45 days.

Acne is a bully; fight back by seeing your esthetician! Schedule your consultation today!
