Beach season is just around the corner! Shaving every day irritates the skin, causes unsightly razor bumps, and has short-term results. A Brazilian wax removes hair from the root resulting in smoother, longer-lasting results. If you have decided to ditch the razor, here are the top 3 things you need to know before scheduling your first Brazilian wax appointment.

Avoid Shaving 3-4 Weeks Before Brazilian Wax

The goal of waxing is to remove the hair from the root. As a result, we prefer the hair to be about 1/3", so the wax can grip the hair allowing us to remove it from the root.

If the hair is too short, the wax can not get a good grip, and the hair will break just above or below the skin's surface. Essentially, that would be the same as shaving, and you will experience regrowth in a few days. So, if you plan to use waxing as your form of hair removal for the summer, stop shaving and schedule your wax before beach season.

How to Prepare Hair and Skin For Brazilian Wax

Waxing is a hair removal service, but I also treat it as a skin service. With that in mind, healthy skin is going to be happy skin post-wax.

When you gently exfoliate and moisturize, waxing hurts less and works more effectively. Gently exfoliating the skin removes dead skin and debris, so the wax only adheres to the hair. A washcloth or homemade scrub will usually suffice. Moisturizing keeps the skin and hair hydrated, decreasing the chances for injury to the skin and hair breakage. Fragrance-free moisturizers are best in the Brazilian area. For smooth, long-lasting results, be sure to gently exfoliate, moisturize and drink the recommended amount of water leading up to your appointment.

Plan Ahead for Your Brazilian Wax

Workout schedule, beach, tanning, intercourse, vacation, and menstrual cycle are things to consider when planning your waxing appointment. It would be best to plan these activities around your wax to keep your skin healthy and happy before and after your wax.

Sweat, friction, sun exposure, and being submerged in water can cause unwanted irritation and infection. Spray tanning before waxing is fine, but beware the wax will remove the tan. It is best to plan your spray tan for 72 hours post-wax to avoid skin irritation. We recommend you avoid sunbathing 72 hours before or after your wax.

Lastly, it is safe and normal to get waxed while on your menstrual cycle; however, the skin is most sensitive during this time. If it is your first time, we recommend you do not wax five days before, during, or five days after your period.
