Great Skin Is More Like a Marathon and Not a Sprint

It is never too late to start your skincare journey, but you must go in with the understanding that it is going to take time, dedication, and consistency. If you are like most people, you want a quick fix; I can remember being in that boat when dealing with adult acne. Just like me, you've probably learned that going for the sprint can make things worse and result in a lost time and resources that could have been dedicated to the marathon.

How Long Will It Take to Fix My Skin?

I would be rich if I had a dollar for every time I hear this question. Interestingly, I had a client who made a shocking statement instead of asking this question. She said, "I know it took me over 60 years to get these wrinkles, so I know it is going to take time to get results." Her comment is very accurate! Many of the skin conditions you are dealing with are weeks, months, and years in the making, so they will not disappear overnight. Why? Because changes are happening on a cellular level and are not often visible to the naked eye for a couple of weeks. So, you must be prepared to stay the course to get the results.

Dedication and Consistency Are Key to Great Skin

Just like running a marathon, you will have to invest resources in the form of time and money and build daily habits conducive to your skincare goals. For example, when preparing for a marathon, you will need to invest time into training, resources into shoes/gear, ensure you get the proper nutrition and rest to perform at your optimal level, and have a trainer/support partner. Skincare is no different.

I believe in the 1:61 rule when it comes to skincare. The 1 represents the minimum times you see your esthetician each month for a facial treatment, and the 61 represents the number of times you care for your skin each month. Next, you have to invest in the correct products. In some cases, using incorrect products can be worse than not using anything at all. Lastly, daily habits are an essential part of this journey. You have to ask yourself, are my habits conducive to the skin results I want to achieve. For example, basic questions are, "Am I drinking a sufficient amount of water? Am I reapplying sunscreen daily as directed?
