Why Your Esthetician Needs to Know Your Medical History?
Filling out consultation/health assessment forms when seeing your esthetician may seem pointless. The truth is the information is vital in determining what products, equipment, and treatments are best for you. I will share a few reasons why, but first, I will share a story about one of my clients, who I will call Mary.
Mary called to schedule an appointment for eyebrow threading because she was tired of being burned every time she got her brows waxed at other places. A few days later, Mary arrived at her appointment, completed the consultation/health assessment form, and wrote "none" in the section that asks about oral and topical medications. As soon as I looked at her skin, under the magnifying lamp, I could tell she was using something aggressive on her skin. When asked, Mary informed me she was using a cream from the dermatologist.
Why Your Esthetician Needs to Know What Medications You are Taking
Many medications can cause the skin to become thin, fragile, and dehydrated, making you more susceptible to damage when receiving waxing and skin treatments. Additionally, others can cause skin conditions like acne and dark spots. In Mary's case, the topical medication, caused the skin to become thin, fragile, and dehydrated. Waxing the compromised skin, caused the skin to rip off and create an injury similar to a 1st-degree burn.
Medicines prescribed by the dermatologist are just one example, but antibiotics, steroids, other common medications, and even oral contraceptives can influence the skin. Don't forget to mention your topical skin care products and supplements; they can also be contraindications for products, equipment and, treatments.
Why Your Esthetician Needs to Know Your Health Conditions
Gone are the days of steam and cream and fluff and buff facials. Technological advances in skincare have resulted in electrical treatments and many skincare devices to create significant changes in your skin. For example, clients love the microcurrent and LED combo we use during the non-surgical facelift treatment. Unfortunately, clients who are pregnant, have heart conditions, seizures, and metal plates are a few who are not good candidates for this treatment. My example is just one, but don't worry, we receive adequate training in all treatments and contraindications, so we will be sure to let you know what is ideal for you.
